The family of Jens Nielsen of Summerland, BC, is saddened to announce his passing on January 26, 2023, at the age of 92. Jens is survived by his wife, Inge; daughter, Susan; sons, Ken and Allan; grandson, Tyler and daughter-in-law, Anita.
Jens was a Danish immigrant who came to Canada in 1952 with a number of fellow Danes after having read an article in a newspaper to ‘Come to Canada, the streets are lined with gold!’
His first occupation when he arrived in BC was at a forestry camp near Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. He eventually decided to move to Vancouver where he began his work as a carpenter and it was in Vancouver that he met his future wife, Inge Frithiof Sorensen, another Danish immigrant. They married in 1955 and had three children.
Jens worked on many large building projects over the years but also built many homes for his family and friends.
In retirement, Jens and Inge would travel the world; Europe, Australia, parts of Asia, and with their RV, Canada, and the United States.
Jens was a fairly quiet man but would sometimes come out with some one-liners that would make us roar with laughter. He also had some sayings during the years where, if someone needed something built or it cost more than expected, you would often hear “It can be done” or “That’s the way it goes Sven” (We didn’t know who Sven was), and the one saying during the latter years was always “Life is good.” It sure was!
