William ‘Bill’ Desmond ‘Des’ Nicholls

July 4, 1932 – September 20, 2019

Bill passed away peacefully at the Dr. Andrew Pavilion in Summerland, BC. 

Bill was predeceased by his parents William and Lillian ‘Pam’ Nicholls; sisters Gladys (Ken) Thomas and Lillian (Len) Hallstead; brother Clifford (wife); and son Jeff.  Bill is survived by his son Scott, former wife Linda Nicholls, niece Linda Riley, 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, their extended families, and close friends. 

Bill was born in Chelmsford, Essex, England and moved to Canada in his early 20’s.  He began his career with Bell Telephone in Montreal.  He relocated to BC where he worked for Okanagan Telephone and BC Tel.  After a 48 year career, Bill retired in 1999 when BC Tel and Telus merged (or so his story goes).  He was a member of the TWU, a dedicated Rotarian, and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. 

Bill truly enjoyed acting in live-theatre productions, listening to Mozart and orchestra music and the many stories on the CBC.  He learned how to speak some Welsh and enjoyed discovering things about Wales.  He was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching baseball, English football (soccer), and cricket. He was a gentle man with a gentle heart.  He will be truly missed.

Thank you to Dr. Wendy Richardson and staff at the Dr. Andrew Pavilion.  Your kindness and care for Bill over these last years is sincerely appreciated.

As per Bill’s wishes, a service will not be held.  He will be laid to rest at the Canyon View Cemetery in Summerland.  In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, 938 28th Ave. W., Vancouver, BC  V5Z 4H4.
