Allen Delaney Obituary

After nearly three years fighting with cancer, Allen chose to pass away at home surrounded by his family on February 8, 2024, at the age of 76. He was a loving husband to his wife Tricia Hunt, a wonderful father to his children Rob and Sara, and grandfather to Henry and George. He will be missed greatly by his sisters, Pat and Doreen, and by the entire Delaney and Hunt families. He was pre-deceased by his parents Anne and Daniel Delaney.

After completing a PhD in Biochemistry at McGill University in 1974, Allen began working in the field of bioinformatics just as computers were beginning to be used in the field of biochemistry. Through his work at the University of British Columbia and the B.C. Cancer Agency he made many contributions to the field of genomics. Despite preferring to work on pure research overwriting, he was involved in roughly 100 original research works over the course of his career and contributed to large projects such as the human genome project.

He was always excited to share his extensive technical knowledge of computers and technology with others. This often took the form of patiently teaching his children, young nephews/nieces and family friends to use and learn about computers, and directly influenced many of them in terms of career and life choices.

Allen was an avid cyclist and tandem rider. This took on many forms throughout his life. It began with bike racing and bare-bones cycling trips across much of Canada and the western United States with Tricia, his sister-in-law Pam and many others (that dared to join them!). Later on, they were able to share their love of cycling with their children, nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

In 2008, Allen and Tricia moved from Vancouver to Summerland, BC. No stranger to hard work, he terraced a hillside vineyard by hand and since he was always a scientist at heart, he began experimenting with growing many varieties of grapes for making his own wine. In later years, he got to watch his grandchildren, Henry and George (of Sara and her husband John), begin to thrive and grow.

Allen’s kindness, calm presence and quick humour will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held later in the spring.
