Ann Hodgson Obituary

We are sad to announce the passing of our wonderful mother, Ann Marie Hodgson, on April 26, 2022, at the age of 88. Ann was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her eldest son, and three of her brothers (Sven, Jack, and Eric).

Ann was born on Jan. 6, 1934, in Seba Beach, Alberta, to Jean and Erland Carlson. She was the eldest of six children. Ann met the love of her life, Lee Hodgson, while on a skating date with another fellow at the age of 16.  Ann and Lee were married on Nov. 11, 1952. They had four children: Alan, Sherry, Brian, and Pam. Although Ann wasn’t too keen on moving to BC, they settled in Penticton in 1966 and she quickly fell in love with the Okanagan. By 1970, the Hodgson family moved to Summerland. Ann and Lee belonged to Kinsmen and enjoyed many social gatherings at their beautiful home overlooking Okanagan Lake. Family members from Alberta were always welcomed in the summer to enjoy good times. Ann worked as a legal secretary for over twenty years for Gilchrist & Sinclair in Penticton. She took much pride in her job.

Ann and Lee were snowbirds in Mesa, Arizona, for many years before and after they retired. While in Mesa, Ann belonged to a choir as she always loved to sing. Back in Summerland, Ann enjoyed spending time sewing her own clothes, knitting, crocheting, crafting, gardening, golfing, playing bridge, and spending time with her five grandchildren. Together, Ann and Lee loved to socialize, dance, play cards, and have fun. After Lee passed away in 2010, Ann always had family members visiting her. There was often a fun card game going on at Ann’s house that included lots of laughter, treats, and good conversation. Ann was always thoughtful as she remembered to send birthday cards to family and friends. Her final years were spent reading a book every few days, crocheting hats and blankets, and enjoying visits from her sister, Jane, and her daughters.

This past year was definitely a struggle for Ann. Her son, Brian, and his dog, Jax, checked on Ann daily and were of great comfort to her. Sister-in-law Jackie made lots of dinners for Ann and visited regularly. Pam spent many weekends in Summerland helping to take care of Ann. Ann’s family would like to thank those who played a big role in making sure Ann was comfortable during her final months: Dr. Elizabeth Watters, all of the amazing nurses who cared for Ann at Penticton hospital and hospice, the wonderful care aids from Interior Health and her palliative support team. We are so grateful to everyone for their kindness and patience over the past few months.

Ann is survived by her children Brian (Wendy), Sherry (Don), and Pam (Clive); her grandchildren Joey (Laura), Katie (Jackson), Keith (Andrew), Nicole (Kevin), and Sophie; her siblings, Jane and Mac, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ann always said she had lived a wonderful, happy life. Her beautiful spirit and warm smile will be missed by many.

Ann’s family will be gathering in the summer for a Celebration of Life.
