Doreen Murray Obituary

Doreen ‘Cleo’ Anne Murray (September 19, 1948 – February 8, 2021) and Shari ‘Sierra’ Dawn Hook (August 30, 1969-October 2, 2020), Mother and Daughter, passed away with their families by their side after hard fought battles with cancer, Sierra after over a year and Cleo after four months and the loss of her daughter.

Cleo was born and raised in Penticton and she in turn raised her family there.  She spent some time in Vancouver until moving back to Peachland in 2006.  Her work included writing for the Peachland View and being a caregiver.  She was also a member of the Okanagan Goddess Group.

Friends and family describe Cleo as a free spirit, ahead of her time particularly in the realm of health and fitness.  She held workshops about raw foods and cured herself holistically of two cancers.  She researched her topic well.  It truly was a passion.

Cleo had other loves as well.  She had great fondness for cats and the water (kayaking), but dearly loved her daughter Shari.

She was a gracious, classy, soft spoken, and beautiful woman, generous with her knowledge.

Sierra too lived in Vancouver and worked as a bicycle courier before returning to the Okanagan and finding employment at Greta Ranch, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Her interests were many, often centering on the outdoors – cross country skiing, skate skiing, kite surfing, kayaking, ice hockey, soccer, motorbiking, swinging in her hammock at the beach – all loves.  She also relished learning, avidly reading and researching like her Mom with a leaning toward ancient cultures.  Nature, pets, travelling (especially in her beloved motorhome in which she lived) – Sierra was enthusiastic about it all and shared it with her partner, lover, and best friend for five years, Christine Beham.

“The biggest joy and happiness in life is…to love and be loved.  To you Sierra…the love of my life.” ~ Christine.

Cleo and Sierra are both survived by Russell Hook of Oliver, BC (ex-husband/father); Michael Hook and family (son/brother); Christine Beham (daughter-in-law/partner); and Allan Murray (Carleen) and family of Summerland, David Murray (Christine) and family of Kelowna, and Barry Hook  and family of Vancouver (brothers/uncles).  They were predeceased by Dave and Doris Murray (parents/grandparents).

Thanks must go to the team at Peachland Pharmacy, Dr. Fourie, and the palliative care nurses in their care of both Cleo and Sierra and to the home care nurses and end-of-life doulas Tracy and Anastasia in their support for Cleo.  Sierra’s battle was fought with the love and caring of her mom Cleo and partner Christine.  Cleo was very thankful, as well, for support of her special friends Wendy, Dawn, and Heather; her siblings Allan, Carleen, David, and Christine; and daughter-in-law Christine.

“Next time you see bald eagles know our spirits are with you.”
