Earl "Byron" Alward Obituary

ALWARD, Byron

February 10, 1926 – April 17, 2019

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Byron Alward at the age of 93.  Byron was predeceased by his loving wife, Joan. He is survived by their 5 children, Jack, Barb (Norm) Monroe, Carol (Greg) Cleveland, Jim (Francine) and Doug.  He is also survived by 6 grandchildren Maizie and Melanie, Mick and Marty, Jim and Brent, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Earl Byron Alward was born in Vancouver, raised on a farm in Abbotsford, served in the army at the end of WW II, returned to UBC before marrying Joan in White Rock on Valentine’s Day 1948, built a home in Port Coquitlam where he resided for forty years before retiring and moving to Penticton.  He had two successful careers where his leadership abilities shone brightly as a Psychiatric Nurse at Essondale/Riverview in Coquitlam and as Superintendent of Pacific Resins in New Westminster.

Not only a devoted husband and father, Byron dedicated his busy, active life to helping others (ie. as an Akela in the Cub/Scouts), raising family, his work careers and his many hobbies – gardening, stock market, wine making, camping and hiking.  Byron and Joan spent most summers exploring B.C. in their trailer, hiking with family members and generally enjoying and loving Beautiful B.C.   He had the gift of the gab, stopping to chat with whomever he came across on his daily walks.  During the final years of his life, Byron was an inspiration, living independently and living every day to its fullest.

Many Penticton residents will remember Byron on his electric cart, with Joan on his knee, during their scenic rides along the Skaha and Okanagan beachfronts.
