Gerald Albert Irving

Gerry was born in Brandon, Manitoba on August 24, 1929, a little brother to Hubert. His parents Emma and James were busy farming in the district of Whitehead, Souris, Manitoba.

In 1953, Gerry married his sweetheart Iolene Kirkby and they set up home on the farm. In 1954, Iolene gave birth to Maxine, and in 1956 Wilfred. Gerald always thought that he would continue farming however his father’s sudden passing in 1955 changed everything and the farm was sold. Gerry and his family moved to Dryden, Ontario, where he started work as a lineman. In 1962, Gerry and Iolene had their 3rd child Gail. He worked in Dryden until the summer of 1966 when he decided to move the family West, settling in Summerland. Here he built the home that he remained in for 56 years and was employed as a lineman by the Corporation of Summerland for 29 years.

Gerry enjoyed spending time with family and friends; they were very important to him. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. His never-ending ability to fix things earned him the nickname “the Handyman”. No job was too hard or too complicated for Gerry to tackle. Gerald was a wonderful Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-grandfather, and Friend. He always wanted the best for everyone, if you needed something he was always there for you. Gerry was smart, hardworking, and a natural-born caregiver. Gerry did a wonderful job looking after Iolene for many years. A true testament to his dedication to her. Gerald was loved for his generous spirit, thoughtful nature, and dry sense of humor.

He will forever be remembered, loved, and sadly missed by his children Maxine (Stuart), Wilfred (Cathy), and Gail (Bernie), by his Grandchildren Tara (Allen), Ilea (Trevor), Mitchell (Katie), Danny (Nikki), Kevin (Jannine), and Joel. Also, by his Great-Grandchildren Ameilea, Charlotte, Prairie, Ada, Finley, and Everlynn.

A Memorial Service will be taking place on Friday, May 26, at the Summerland Providence Chapel, 13205 Rosedale Avenue at 10:00 am.
