It is with great sadness that the family of Hans Wolfgang Wankel of Penticton, BC announces his passing. Left to mourn Hans are his wife of 64 years, Edith; their daughter, Irene (Ron) Ramsay; sons, Norman (Bonnie) and Wilfred (Cathy); 8 grandchildren, Jason, Curtis, Craig, Anita, Bryce, Kurt, Danielle, Allison; 8 great-grandchildren. In addition, Hans leaves behind his nephew Peter (Barbara) Münster and niece Mariele (Karl) Wrulich, all of Ratingen, Germany.
Hans and Edith began their long journey together in Berlin and then on to the new world, immigrating to Regina, SK in 1957. Their love of the Rocky Mountains caused them to move to Calgary, AB in 1976 and finally to Penticton, BC in 1990.
Hans was a man of quiet pleasures. He loved reading, classical music and opera. He also loved the outdoors. Together with Edith and often with their children, they camped, hiked and skied throughout western Canada.
Hans had a passion for family and genealogy and he spent the better part of his life tracing his ancient German family’s roots all the way back to the 12th century. In this work, he was able to make contact with relatives throughout the world.
There will a Memorial Celebration of Hans' life at a later date.
