Kenneth Cocke Obituary

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, Kenneth Ronald Cocke, who passed away at the age of 96 in Penticton, BC.

Dad was born and grew up in Athabasca, Alberta. He moved to Vancouver in his late teens where he finished high school, and later met and married our mother, Mamie Macdonald in 1950. In 1952 Dad joined the Vancouver Police Department where he worked until his retirement as a Superintendent in 1986. Dad’s most lasting legacy to public safety was the leading role he played in helping Vancouver become the first city in Canada to institute the 911 emergency calling system and to install computer terminals in patrol cars.

Dad and Mom shared a loving and fulfilling life raising their four children, being active in their community and travelling.

After Mom’s death in 1989, Dad married Zona (Nelson) Goheen, a childhood friend from his days in Athabasca. They spent 25 wonderful years together until Zona passed away in 2015. Dad was also predeceased by his youngest son, Vaughn, Vaughn’s partner, Avril Peters, and his brother, Dennis.

Dad is survived by his sons, Terry (Leslie) and Laurie (Marilyn); his daughter, Leslie (Colin); his daughter-in-law, Monna; his grandchildren, Jennifer (Demian), Graeme (Alison), Bradley (Sandy), Geoffrey, Michelle (Cory), Marin (Drew), Conor (Jen) and Callum (Kaoverii); his great grandchildren, Asher, Elliott, Chloe, Isla, Aria, Hannah, Dawson, Velocity, Elend, Katharine, and Emma.

Dad is also survived by Zona’s children, Kim (Vicky), Cindy (Bill), and Kelly (Denise); Zona’s grandchildren, Gillian (Dan), Philip (Candace), Andrew (Sarah), Laura, Alyssa (Brody), and Carly (Kayden); and great grandchildren, Ryan, Ashlyn, Hannah, Gabby and Freya.

The family thanks Dr. Lawrie and the staff at Haven Hill Retirement Centre and Meridian Rehabilitation for their kind, capable and compassionate support of Dad.

We invite friends to join us at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at Pacific Spirit United Church, 2195 West 45th Avenue, Vancouver, BC for Dad’s service. A second Celebration of Life will be held at Providence Funeral Homes in Penticton on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers please donate to a charity of your choice.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
