Kerry Brown Obituary

On October 12, 2020 Kerry Brown passed away after a brief illness at Penticton Regional Hospital.

Kerry was born in Duncan, BC and spent a happy, active childhood in Lake Cowichan, growing up with his three siblings. Kerry worked in the woods to pay for a university education in Victoria where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1971. While on campus he met his wife, Joy who was also studying for a degree. After both graduated, they married in 1973 and lived in Duncan for a year. Following that they decided to go back to university to get their teaching diplomas in Education. Upon completing their studies, they were hired by the Cariboo Chilcotin School District to teach elementary school in Williams Lake. The next 32 years were spent living and teaching there. Many students at schools where Kerry taught benefitted from his expertise in coaching. He always encouraged kids to be physically active and develop skills in their sport of choice. Outside of school Kerry participated in recreational softball, floor hockey, volleyball, cross country skiing, downhill skiing and a favourite, golf.

Kerry and Joy retired in Penticton in 2007. He continued to play golf on courses throughout the Okanagan and enjoyed participating in senior’s softball and volleyball. Never one to sit still for long, he volunteered countless hours working on the grounds of the strata complex where he lived. He also served on councils for ten years. Kerry had a strong work ethic, a steady moral compass and enjoyed a full life of working, traveling and contributing in his own quiet way. He was always one to tease and his quick wit would lighten up many a situation.

Kerry is survived by his wife, Joy; brother, George; sisters, Barb (Jim) and Cathy (Roger); mother-in-law, Emmy and sister-in-law, Diana.

He is predeceased by his parents, Sam and Jean; nephew, Nathan and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

At Kerry’s request there will be no formal service.
