Raymond Moore Obituary

MOORE, Raymond Boyd

October 5, 1926 – May 7, 2019

Suddenly, but peacefully after a short illness, Ray passed away at Westview Place, Penticton, B.C. Ray will be lovingly remembered by his Daughter, Wilma, son- in- law, Leon, grandson Ryan (Carrie), as well as nieces, nephews and many friends. He was predeceased by his father, Frederick Arnold Moore, mother, Mary Ellen Sparks, siblings, Pearl, Mabel, Fred, Don, Clarence, Audrey and Shirley.
Ray was a polio survivor, contracting the crippling disease at 10 months of age In Winnipeg. His childhood consisted of 13 surgeries which left him with a lifelong limp. In spite of his disability he became a skilled carpenter, cabinet maker, electrician, boat builder, model ship maker and appliance/TV repairman. The saying was, “If Ray can’t fix it, nobody can!”
His lasting legacies include the mahogany boat, “Willy M,” and the cottage, lighthouse, mill and greenhouse at Falcon Lake. He built all of these by hand and his own plans starting in 1956.
At Falcon Lake Ray could always be found at The Falcon’s Nest having coffee with the owners, “Mert” and “Gert,” their son Bob, Lawrie Hamin, Robbie Robertson and many others.
In 1972, upon the first meeting of Ray and his future son-in-law, Leon, Ray said, “Statistically speaking I should be dead!” because of the shadow Ray lived under due to polio. He would double his lifespan after that moment!
In 1995 Ray moved to BC with his dear companion, Vera Winsor, following her daughter, Norma to Princeton and then to Penticton 2 years later. He loved the climate and the scenery of the Okanagan Valley. He made many new friends there including Don from the sailing boat club who was extremely kind and helpful, Walter from the block where Ray and Vera lived 20 years who looked out for Ray in many kind ways, Dave who was with Ray during his last day, plus many others.
Ray will be buried at the Southeast Whiteshell Cemetery, Falcon Lake, MB during a private graveside service. Flowers gratefully declined.
