Sydney MacDonald Obituary

Born December 14, 1927 in Wainwright, Alberta, Sydney Alexander MacDonald was raised in Wainwright by parents Herbert and Mary Jane along with brothers, Leonard and George.  After meeting Isabel Eileen Johnson in 1951, they were married April 5th 1952, had three daughters (Marcia, Vicci and Leora) and lovingly supported each other in marriage for more than 69 years.

At age 20, Sid moved to Edmonton, taking an entry level position with Robin Hood Flour Mills where his long and very successful career in sales and management began.  In 1963, Sid moved his family to Calgary becoming district sales manager for Pitney Bowes and in 1969, transferred to the Vancouver area to become Regional Sales Manager.  After retiring from Pitney Bowes in 1984, he and Isabel moved to the Okanagan (Summerland) where they could enjoy the weather and visits from their children and grandchildren.  Westwood Retirement Resort in West Kelowna was chosen to be “home” upon downsizing in 2015.  The Wood Working Shop at Westwood provided Sid with countless hours of building ‘treasures’ for family and friends.  Loved for his humor and quick wit, Sid was a dynamic leader both in business and in retirement.

One of Sid’s greatest pleasures was traveling with Isabel in their motor home all over North America.  As a “Wagon Master” with TRACKS, his exceptional organizational skills, effortless public speaking and lively sense of humor earned him numerous accolades from fellow travelers.  After leaving TRACKS, Sid and Isabel enjoyed many more years of “motor home” life, traveling in Canada and the US.

Sid had a beautiful tenor voice and for years sang with Barber Shop Quartets, in the Presbyterian Church Choir and later with the choir at Westwood Retirement Resort in West Kelowna.

Ever devoted to his wife and children, Sid’s final thoughts and expressions were of love for his family.

As were his wishes, Sid passed away at home on August 7, 2021 at age 93 with loved ones by his side.

Sid is sadly predeceased by eldest grandchild, Laurel (Laurie) Diane Marney who passed away on October 21, 2016.

He is remembered and sadly missed by his loving wife of 69 years, Isabel; his three children, Marcia Marney Rushing (John William) of West Kelowna and Diamondhead, Mississipi, Vicci Armstrong of Vernon, BC, and Leora Hardy (Richard) of Summerland, BC; five grandchildren, Jennifer Gomez (Dario) of Cozumel, Mexico, David Marney of New Orleans, Louisiane, Dorean Kidd (Angus) of Newcastle, United Kindom, Traci Ziegler (John) of Fort St. John, BC, Michael Miske of Fort Langley, BC; five great grandchildren, Payden & Haeli Ziegler, Jack & Charlie Kidd, Maxima Gomez. Isabel’s siblings Marjorie, May & Phillip plus numerous nieces & nephews living in Alberta will also fondly remember Sid.
